The Belt Is More Than Just a Rank

Ask any black belt what their belt means to them, and you will not get a short answer. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the belt is not a participation trophy — it is a record. Every mat burn, every frustrating plateau, every competition loss, every breakthrough sub. Your belt holds it all.

But before you earn those stripes, you need to understand the system, and you need to own a belt that does not fall apart in your first six months of hard training. This guide covers both — the ranks themselves, and the BJJ belts worth owning.

At Element Fight Wear, we make belts for every stage of the journey — from your first kids yellow to a master-grade custom black belt.

The Adult BJJ Belt System

The adult belt progression in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is famously slow. Most practitioners take 10–15 years to reach black belt, and the IBJJF enforces minimum time-in-grade at every level.

Belt Typical Time at Rank What It Represents
White 1–2 years Survival and learning the basics
Blue 2–4 years Foundational technique and escapes
Purple 2–3 years Developed game and serious technical depth
Brown 1–2 years Refinement and teaching ability
Black Minimum 19 years old Mastery of technique, culture, and instruction
Coral Black + 31 years Red-and-black — lifelong contribution
Red Black + ~50 years Grandmaster rank — extraordinarily rare

Stripes Within a Belt

Between belt promotions, most academies award up to four stripes on your current belt as an indication of progress. A white belt with four stripes is close to their blue belt. Stripes are typically black electrical tape or fabric sewn onto the black bar at the end of the belt.

The Kids BJJ Belt System

Kids belts follow a different system because children cannot hold adult ranks. The IBJJF kids belt system goes:

Age Belt Progression
4–15 years White → Grey → Yellow → Orange → Green
16+ Transition to adult system (white / blue / purple / brown / black)

Each kids belt typically has three sub-ranks — for example Grey-White, Grey, Grey-Black — to give young grapplers more frequent promotions and keep them motivated. The progression rewards years of consistent training, not raw talent.

🧒 Parent Tip

Kids grow fast and train hard. A good kids belt needs to be durable enough to survive daily rolling but small enough to tie properly on a young grappler. Our Element Kids Competition Belts are sized specifically for kids from age 4+.

What Actually Goes Into a Good BJJ Belt

Most beginners do not realise how much variation there is in belt quality until their first belt starts falling apart — knot loosening mid-roll, fraying at the ends, or bar stitching coming undone after three months.

Here is what to look for:

  • Material: 100% cotton or pearl weave cotton blend. Cheap synthetics feel slippery and do not hold a knot.
  • Stitching: Reinforced rows of stitching — the more the better. Eight rows is standard on quality belts.
  • Weight: A belt should feel solid but not stiff as a board. Premium pearl weave belts have a refined, structured feel.
  • Bar: The black bar at the end should be securely stitched, not glued or loosely attached.
  • Knot hold: A good belt holds its knot through an entire training session without repeated re-tying.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size BJJ belt should I buy?

BJJ belts are sized A0 through A5. Wrap the belt around your waist with the knot tied — the ends should hang 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) past the knot. When in doubt, size up — a long belt is easier to tie than a short one.

How do I tie a BJJ belt?

The most common knot is the standard Jiu-Jitsu knot. Wrap the belt twice around your waist, cross the ends, tuck one under both layers, and tie a square knot. Plenty of YouTube tutorials demonstrate it clearly.

Should I wash my BJJ belt?

Yes, despite the old superstition about washing away your knowledge. A sweaty belt is a bacterial breeding ground. Wash cold, air dry, and your belt will be fine. The knowledge stays in your head, not the fabric.

How are BJJ stripes awarded?

Stripes are awarded at the discretion of your head instructor, based on consistency, technical growth, and mat time. Most academies award stripes every 6–12 months between belt promotions.

Can I buy a belt I have not earned?

You can buy any colour belt you want, but you should only wear the rank you have actually earned from your instructor. Showing up at a gym in an unearned black belt is the fastest way to get “tested” in sparring — and humbled.

Does Element offer custom belts for gyms?

Yes — we offer custom embroidered belts for academies and teams including custom gym logos. Contact us for wholesale pricing.

The Bottom Line on BJJ Belts

Your belt is a record of the hours you have put in. It deserves to be built well. Whether you are buying your first white belt or investing in a custom black belt to mark a lifetime of training, the belt you choose should match the effort you have put in to earn it.

The Element Fight Wear belt range covers every stage — Competition belts for daily training, Katana Premium for competition and promotions, Custom Master belts for the serious practitioner, and Kids belts sized for the next generation.
