What to Look for in a Quality BJJ Gi
Choosing the right Jiu-Jitsu Gi depends on your goals, training frequency, and personal preferences. Key factors include fabric weight (often listed in GSM), weave type, collar thickness, and overall cut. Lighter Gis are ideal for competition and warm climates, while medium and heavyweight Gis offer more durability for daily training.
Gi Weave Types Explained
-
Single Weave: Lightweight and breathable—great for beginners and hot weather.
-
Pearl Weave: The most popular choice; strong yet light, perfect for both training and competition.
-
Gold Weave: A balance of durability and comfort with a softer feel.
-
Heavy/Cotton Weave: Traditional, extremely tough, but less breathable.
How a Gi Should Fit
A proper Gi should allow full mobility without excessive bagginess. Sleeves should reach no more than 5 cm from the wrist, and pants should rest above the ankles—IBJJF standards if you plan to compete. A well-fitted Gi also makes it harder for opponents to grip.
Why Choose Element Fightwear
Element Fightwear designs Gis with reinforced stress points, breathable fabrics, and athletic cuts tailored to modern Jiu-Jitsu. Every Kimono is tested for durability and movement to ensure it can handle the demands of hard training, drilling, and competition.
Gi Care Tips
To maximize your Gi’s lifespan:
-
Always wash with cold water.
-
Hang dry to prevent shrinkage.
-
Avoid bleach and harsh detergents.
-
Wash after every training session to prevent bacteria buildup.
Competition vs. Training Gis
Competition Gis are typically lightweight with clean, minimal designs that meet IBJJF regulations. Training Gis may offer extra reinforcements and stylistic variations suited for everyday rolling. Having both allows you to preserve your comp Gi for tournaments.
