Why Your Mouthguard Is Non-Negotiable

Ask any grappler who has taken an elbow to the face mid-scramble what they wish they had been wearing. Ask any MMA fighter who has spit blood after sparring. A mouthguard is the single piece of protective gear most likely to save you from a $5,000 dental bill — and most likely to be forgotten in a gym bag.

The problem? Most mouthguards are terrible. They are bulky, they make you drool, you cannot breathe properly, and you sure cannot talk to your training partner. So people stop wearing them. And then someone takes a knee to the mouth.

Sisu changed that. At 1.6mm to 2.4mm thin, Sisu mouthguards are 50% thinner than conventional boil-and-bite guards while providing superior impact protection. At Element Fight Wear, we stock the full Sisu lineup because it is the only mouthguard technology we have found that serious grapplers will actually wear every session.

What Makes Sisu Different

Ultra-Thin Design

Traditional mouthguards are 4–5mm thick. Sisu starts at 1.6mm. That thinness is not a weakness — it is the result of a different material technology.

Diffusix Technology

Sisu uses a perforated thermoplastic material with Diffusix engineering. When impact force hits the mouthguard, the perforations distribute the force across a larger area rather than transferring it directly to your teeth. This is the same principle car crumple zones use — spread the energy out.

Breathe, Talk, Drink

The combination of thinness and perforation means you can breathe through the mouthguard, communicate with your partner clearly, and even drink water without removing it. For BJJ specifically — where you are constantly communicating (“tap”, “ok”, “go lighter”) — this matters more than in striking sports.

Remoldable Up to 20 Times

Unlike single-use boil-and-bite guards, Sisu can be remolded with hot water up to 20 times. If the fit is not perfect the first time, reheat and remold. If your dental work changes, remold.

🦷 The Dental Bill Test

A chipped tooth costs $300–$1,000. A cracked tooth needing a crown: $1,500–$3,000. A lost tooth with implant: $4,000–$6,000. A Sisu mouthguard: $19.99–$29.99. Do the math — not wearing a mouthguard is the most expensive decision in your training life waiting to happen.

How to Fit Your Sisu Mouthguard

  1. Boil water — bring water to a boil, then remove from heat for 30 seconds
  2. Soak the mouthguard in the hot water for 20 seconds
  3. Remove with a slotted spoon and quickly rinse under cold water for 1 second
  4. Place on your upper teeth and bite down firmly
  5. Use your tongue and fingers to press the material against your teeth and gums
  6. Hold for 30 seconds, then remove and rinse in cold water to set the shape

If the fit is not perfect, simply remold — up to 20 times. This forgiveness is what makes Sisu different from single-use competitors.

Care & Hygiene

  • Rinse with cool water after every use
  • Store in a ventilated case — sealed cases breed bacteria
  • Clean weekly with mild soap or mouthguard cleaner
  • Replace every 6–12 months with heavy daily use
  • Never leave in a hot car — the material can deform

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Sisu mouthguards IBJJF legal?

Yes. Sisu mouthguards are compliant with IBJJF rules and all major BJJ / MMA / grappling competition regulations.

How long does a Sisu mouthguard last?

With daily use, expect 6–12 months. With 2–3 training sessions per week, 12–18 months. Replace if you notice tears, thinning, or if the fit becomes loose.

Can I wear a Sisu mouthguard with braces?

Yes — all Sisu models work with braces, but we recommend having a dental professional assist with the initial fit if you wear braces.

Can I use a Sisu for both upper and lower teeth?

No. Sisu is designed for the upper teeth. Most combat sports only require upper teeth protection because the impact forces come from below.

What is the dental warranty?

Sisu mouthguards come with up to a $35,000–$50,000 limited dental warranty for the first year, depending on the model. Check the specific model’s terms at purchase.

Can I re-mold if the fit is wrong?

Yes — up to 20 times. Simply repeat the fitting process with hot water. This is one of the main advantages over conventional boil-and-bite guards that can only be molded once.

The Bottom Line on Mouthguards

The best mouthguard is the one you will actually wear. Sisu wins because its ultra-thin, breathable design removes every excuse not to wear it. Compare to a traditional bulky mouthguard that ends up in your bag instead of your mouth — the Sisu is on your teeth, protecting you, every round.

At $19.99 for the Aero, $24.99 for the 3D, and $29.99 for the Max, Sisu pricing is trivial compared to a single dental injury. Stock the Sisu range at Element Fight Wear and wear it every session.
