Why No-Gi Needs Different Gear
If you come from a gi background, the first thing you notice about no-gi is the pace. Without lapels and sleeves to grip, the game speeds up dramatically. Sweat becomes your opponent’s best friend. Hygiene becomes non-negotiable. And suddenly the gear you wear is not just about looking sharp — it is functional equipment that directly affects how you train and recover.
The three pieces that make up a complete no-gi kit are the rashguard, the fight shorts, and the spats (or leggings). Together they protect your skin, manage sweat, prevent mat burn, and keep you hygienic in one of the dirtiest-surface sports in existence.
At Element Fight Wear, we build no-gi gear designed for the humid climates of South East Asia and the demands of daily hard training — breathable, durable, and priced to actually own more than one of each.
Rashguards — The Foundation of No-Gi Kit
A rashguard is not optional in no-gi. It serves four jobs:
- Prevents mat burn from friction against your training partners and the mats
- Protects against skin infections like ringworm and staph by reducing skin-to-mat and skin-to-skin contact
- Wicks sweat so you and your partners are not rolling on slick skin
- Provides compression which helps muscle recovery and keeps you warmer in air-conditioned gyms
Short Sleeve vs Long Sleeve
Both work — pick based on your preference and climate:
- Short sleeve: Cooler, better for humid gyms. More exposed arm skin.
- Long sleeve: Full arm coverage, best for hygiene and mat burn prevention. Slightly warmer.
🥵 South East Asia Training Tip
Training in tropical heat? Short sleeve is usually more comfortable, but a quality long-sleeve rashguard made with performance fabric will still outperform a basic t-shirt for wicking sweat. Our rashguard range includes both cuts.
Fight Shorts — Made for Grappling, Not the Gym
Normal gym shorts will not survive a week of BJJ. The side seams blow out from open guard. The drawstring comes undone every time someone passes your guard. The waistband rolls down during inversions.
Purpose-built fight shorts solve all of that:
- Reinforced stitching in high-stress areas so seams do not blow out
- Internal drawstring (not external) that cannot come undone mid-roll
- Flexible side slits allowing full range of motion for guard work
- Stretch panels for comfort through the full movement range
- No pockets or zippers that could cut training partners
Spats — The Unsung Hero
Spats (compression leggings designed for combat sports) are the most overlooked piece of no-gi kit. Worn under your fight shorts, they:
- Prevent leg mat burn — especially critical in bottom guard positions
- Add a hygiene barrier between your skin and the mats
- Provide compression for recovery and injury prevention
- Let you train submissions like triangles and heel hooks without skin friction burns
If you train no-gi more than once a week and do not own spats, start there. The difference in mat burn alone is transformative.

How Many Sets Do You Need?
| Training Frequency | Recommended Kit |
|---|---|
| 1–2x per week | 2 rashguards, 2 shorts, 1 spats |
| 3–4x per week | 3–4 rashguards, 3 shorts, 2 spats |
| 5+x per week | 5+ rashguards, 4+ shorts, 3+ spats |
The rule is simple: you need clean kit for every session, and performance fabric takes 24 hours to fully dry in humid climates. Owning enough gear to rotate through a week of training is not vanity — it is hygiene.
Care Guide for No-Gi Kit
- Wash immediately after training. Sweat-saturated performance fabric breeds bacteria fast. Do not leave it in your bag overnight.
- Wash cold (30°C): Hot water degrades performance fabric elasticity.
- Air dry: Tumble dryers destroy the compression fit within 10–15 washes.
- Avoid fabric softener: It coats fibres and reduces moisture-wicking performance.
- Turn inside out: Protects printed designs and sublimation from fading.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need a rashguard for no-gi BJJ?
Yes. Most gyms require one, and even at gyms that do not, you should wear one for hygiene. Skin-to-mat contact is the main way infections like ringworm and staph spread in BJJ.
Can I wear normal gym shorts instead of fight shorts?
Technically yes, but they will not last. Gym shorts have external drawstrings that come undone, pockets and zippers that can cut partners, and seams that blow out. Fight shorts are purpose-built for the sport.
What is the difference between spats and regular compression tights?
Spats are reinforced at the knee and shin areas for grappling abrasion, designed to be worn under shorts, and use combat-sport-appropriate prints that are IBJJF legal. Regular compression tights will wear out faster.
Are Element rashguards IBJJF legal?
Yes — our ranked rashguards follow IBJJF colour requirements (50% of the rashguard matches your belt rank) and are competition approved.
How do I choose a rashguard size?
Rashguards should be tight-fitting but not restrictive. Go by your chest measurement and your usual athletic top size. When in doubt, size up slightly — a too-tight rashguard restricts movement during inversions.
Can women wear standard Element rashguards?
Yes, but we also stock women-specific cuts with tailored fit. Both work — some women prefer unisex cuts for the looser fit, others prefer women-specific cuts for better chest contouring.
The Bottom Line on No-Gi Gear
No-gi BJJ and MMA demand gear built for the sport. Regular athletic wear is not enough — it will fail within weeks and it will not protect you from the hygiene risks inherent to grappling. A proper kit of rashguard, fight shorts, and spats is foundational equipment, not a luxury.
The Element Fight Wear no-gi range is priced to let you own multiple sets — because you need multiple sets to train consistently in any real climate. Worldwide shipping, free over $199.
